Help! I Don’t Know What to Write - Part 2 of 4

By Karen Brunet | April 30, 2009

You’re sitting at your computer, trying to figure out what you’re going to write about, and your mind keeps coming up with blanks.

Every time an idea comes up, you strike it down because you think it won’t work - probably for one of the following reasons:

  • You’ve run out of things to write about.
  • You’ve already written about that topic.
  • You don’t think you’re enough of an expert to write on the subject.
  • The topic has already been covered in detail somewhere else.

Here’s a simple exercise to help you get into the right mindset so you can generate an unlimited number of article writing ideas.

Step 1.  Realize that you can’t see the forest because of the trees.

You are an expert in your field. Imagine that all the knowledge you have about a topic is a forest of trees.  And each idea or insight you have is a tree in that forest. If you’re standing in the forest, all you see is a few trees at a time.

In the same way, most professionals don’t realize how much they know on a subject because they’re too immersed in their topic (forest) to see all their knowledge (the trees) at once.

Maybe you’ve written ideas down for 10-20 articles or blog posts on your topic.  And now that those are written, you’re thinking you have nothing else to write about.

Actually, you have a lot more content to write about than you realize.  So the first step is to realize that.

Do you think you’ve run out of things to write about? That could only be true if you’ve run out of opinions.  And everyone has opinions.

Are you reluctant to write an article on a topic you’ve already covered? What is repetition to you as the expert is reinforcement to those who are still learning.  And we all need reinforcement when learning new information.

Do you think you aren’t enough of an expert to write on the subject?  Remember that you don’t need to know everything about a topic in order to be an expert in one area.  An expert is someone who knows more than 90% of the rest of the population.

Has the topic already been covered in detail somewhere else?  Ask yourself these questions. Do you think there are enough diet books written?  Are people still reading them?

What is your biggest obstacle to writing?  Is it one of the obstacles above or a different one?  Let us know in the comments section of this article, and I’ll give you tips on getting through it.
