Attract Clients – 5 Ways to Make It Easy for Clients to Find You in the Search Engines

By Karen Brunet | April 11, 2009

As a coach, consultant, or other service professional, you want clients to find you easily.  And with the Internet and today’s WordPress blogs, it’s easier than ever to gain global visibility to your niche market.

I encourage my clients to have a blog and to post articles to it regularly to encourage frequent visits from the search engines.  The more often you add content to your blog, the better you rank in search engine results.

Blogs generally get indexed faster by the search engines than HTML sites.  But it doesn’t happen automatically.

Here are 5 strategies to make it easier for clients to find you and your WordPress blog.

1. Know what keywords your clients are searching for.

The fastest way to get found by your ideal client is to know exactly what words they are searching for when looking for your services.

Keywords can be one word, like “doctor,” or a combination of several words, like “Atlanta real estate agent.” Create a list of 5-10 keywords that you want to focus on.

Combinations of 3-5 words will usually give you the best results.  One word like “doctor” is not specific enough to attract a particular niche.

On the other hand “San Diego doctor specializing in advanced dermatitis in children” may be a little too specific to get good results.

You can search for your best keywords at no cost here: http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com.

If you’d like a more robust keyword search tool, I use and recommend NicheBOT.  You can get NicheBOT here for less than $18 per month.

2.  Use keywords in your article title.

Search engines give more attention to the words in titles, headlines, and sub-headlines than to the general content in a webpage.

You can use this to your advantage and optimize your articles to get indexed for certain keywords and keyword phrases.

3.  Use keywords and related words in the content of your articles.

In addition to using your keywords in your title, you’ll also want to include them in your article.

Don’t overdo it though.  The ratio should be about one keyword for every 100 words of article content.  Also, the keywords should be integrated naturally so that the article reads well.

Search engines also look for keyword synonyms within your content to decide what an article is about.  So you’ll want to have a list of related keywords to use throughout your article as well.

For instance, if your article is about “great pasta recipes,” you’ll want to include related words like spaghetti, macaroni, Alfredo sauce, Italian, spices, oregano, and tomatoes.

4. Use categories that include your keywords.

WordPress enables you to easily organize your articles into categories. You get to name these categories anything you want.

With categories, your prospects can quickly find information on the topics they most want to know about.

Add your keyword to the category name if space allows.  It will help you to get indexed for that keyword in the search engines and thereby attract more ideal clients to your site.

For example, if your site is about “dog training”, you may choose categories like dog training tips, dog training resources, and dog training in the home.

5. Configure your blog privacy settings.

There are several settings you will want to configure in your WordPress blog.  For the purposes of this article, the most important is the blog privacy setting.

If your blog is set to block search engines, the search engines won’t visit and index your site.  Also, you won’t have a RSS feed for people to subscribe to your blog by syndication.

Blocking search engines doesn’t mean that your site is password protected.  People can still access it by typing the URL in their browser address bar or clicking on a hyperlink to your site.  But it does mean that your clients won’t find you easily in the search engine results.
