Websites for Coaches – Get High Ranking in Google for Keywords in Meta Tags

By Karen Brunet | December 5, 2009

Sheri had 2 questions about web page meta tags following our recent SEO for Coaches class.  I know you will all benefit from these great Q & A’s on our websites for coaches series.

If I have specific words in the meta tags do I have to have those same exact words in my copy?

high-ranking-in-GoogleAnswer:

If you want to get high ranking in Google, then the answer is, “Absolutely yes!”  The search engines, like Google, want you to be consistent and honest in what you say your web copy is about.

So if you have a keyword in your page title or meta description or meta keyword list and it is NOT on the webpage, Google probably won’t give you credit for that keyword.

I would aim to have those keywords repeated in 2-5% of the web copy.  Just make sure they sound natural and not forced when someone is reading the copy.

Follow up question:

Does it matter how many meta descriptions we use? Will we be penalized if we have too many?

Answer:

You only get one description meta tag per webpage.  But you can have a different description for each webpage, and it’s a good idea to include keywords in the description.

Also your description meta tag is the 160+ character marketing message that people see in Google, Yahoo, etc. when your site comes up in the search results.  So you want it to be a compelling marketing message that describes the page and makes them want to click on your result.

You also get one keyword meta tag per webpage.  This is a list of keywords all in one meta tag.  You can have as many keywords as you want listed here.  But for SEO purposes, I recommend that you only include the 10 or so keywords that you know you are optimizing your site for.

Don’t bother to include a keyword in the meta tag list if it isn’t found anywhere on the webpage.  It won’t do you much good with the current search engine algorithms to get high ranking in Google.  But then you won’t get penalized either.

To your success,

Karen Brunet
