Websites for Coaches – How to Use Keywords in Titles to Attract Clients

By Karen Brunet | December 3, 2009

Audrey sends this question following our recent SEO for Coaches class.

When you’re using your keywords in all your online materials, how do you get around every article you write and every webpage you have etc. etc. all having virtually the same title?

So for example, if my good keyword phrase is “natural nutrition” or “nutritionist Toronto” how am I going to effectively use those as titles for articles or even within my first paragraphs, as well as my webpages etc?  Everything’s going to end up having the same title and repetitive content.

Also, my niche is weight release. (And I hate using the term weight loss, but I guess for the purposes of getting found I’ll have to use it). So can I really use “weight loss” or “weight release” over and over?

Answer:

questionmarkHow do you get around the issue of repetitive keyword usage?  The answer is that you really don’t, and that it’s OK.

Let me give you a different perspective.  Think of your keyword as your brand or tag line that grabs the attention of your ideal prospect.  Most people who really desire something - more time, more clients, more sales, etc. - never get tired of reading those words.  And the more you use the word(s), the more of an expert on the subject you are perceived to be.

Remember, keywords are what people type in a search box when they are looking for your services.  So it should be a word that will grab their attention.

The other thing you’ll want to keep in mind  is that your niche is one of the most competitive markets online.  I know because I’ve done extensive keyword research on the topic.  “Weight loss” is almost impossible it get into, like “debt reduction” or “Internet marketing.”

If you want your ideal prospects to find you, you will have to have a VERY tight niche and use long-tail keywords.  You’ll also want to target the major city close to where you live.  Otherwise you’ll be a small fish in a very big pond and the competition will have you for lunch.

So given that information, let’s play with one of your keywords.  You’ll need to do some research like I showed you in Google and Google Keyword Tools.  Look for long-tail on “natural nutrition” with decent search volume and reasonable competition.

Then write articles that look something like this:

  • Natural Nutrition for Weight Loss - How to Lose 10 Pounds Before Summer
  • Natural Nutrition for Weight Loss - A Lifestyle of Looking and Feeling Great
  • Natural Nutrition for Weight Loss - My #1 Secret for Boosting Your Immune System While Losing Weight

Write about 10 articles on that keyword.  Then pick another keyword and write 10 more articles in the same style.  Remember, that you want to target 3-5 keywords to start.  Once you’ve optimized your marketing for those, select 3-5 more keywords and use them in your online marketing.

If your ideal client is really interested in losing weight with natural nutrition, then those articles are going to grab their attention.  They are going to look for ALL of your articles with that keyword in it and see you as the expert.

What about “Nutritionist Toronto?”  That doesn’t work well in an article title, does it?  So when this happens, we use our common sense to think about what else we can do .

Would anyone be looking for an article on Toronto Nutritionist?  No, probably not.  But take a look at Handout #5.  Where else can you use the keyword “Toronto Nutritionist” for SEO in the 35+ examples given?  Are you starting to see the possibilities now?

I’d feature it prominently in my social media profiles, website meta tags, blog descriptions and tags, folder names, etc.  There’s at least 10 suggestions on the handout where it makes sense to use it.

So there you have several tips and hints on how to use the keywords that you have chosen to maximize your online marketing for your coaching website.

Thanks for your great question and best wishes on your keyword research.  Let me know if I can be of assistance in the future.

To your success,

Karen Brunet
