Targeted Website Traffic Explained for Coaches and Consultants

A common complaint I hear from coaches and consultants is that their site doesn’t generate new business for them.

One of the first questions I ask is “Are you getting any website traffic?”  Their answers range from “I don’t know” to “Not really.”

If you’re a coach or consultant who wants to know how to get the best traffic to your site, this article is for you.

Why is Traffic Important?

Website traffic is the life-blood of your online business.  People can’t hire you unless they first know what you have to offer.  And online, they won’t know what you have to offer unless they visit your webpage.

So if you’re not getting website visitors, you’re not building a list of prospects and getting new clients.

There’s No Magic Traffic Wand

There are lots of ways to get traffic to your site.  But keep in mind that no matter which method you choose, it will take dedication, work, and time.

Some traffic sources, like pay-per-click, will generate traffic faster.  Some methods, like SEO to get high search engine ranking, may have longer lasting results.  To be successful, you’ll want to pick one method that works well for you and get really good at it before trying a second method.

One of the biggest mistakes I see coaches and consultants make with online marketing is that they try to get traffic from too many different areas at once.  The result is that they never master any of them and get mediocre results from all of them.

How to Get Targeted Website Traffic

You’re not just interested in traffic to your website.  You want the best traffic in order to get the highest response from website visitors.  It’s not enough to just put your message in front of a ton of traffic.

For instance, let’s say your business is professional decorating.  You’ll get more leads and clients from 50 people looking to build their dream home, than from 500 people who are checking messages at their Gmail account and click on an ad.

So focus on activities that will drive pre-qualified traffic to your website, such as joint-venture relationships, article marketing, and video marketing.

Pre-qualify visitors with your search engine listings by using words and phrases that especially appeal to your ideal client. For instance, if you specialize in career coaching for engineering professionals, make sure those words are easy to read in your web page titles and meta descriptions.

Track Your Traffic

Last but certainly not least, use the power of Google Analytics to monitor where your traffic is coming from.  When you find that you’re getting significant traffic from a particular source  - such as Google, Yahoo, Facebook, or Digg -  look for ways to increase your presence there.

Web traffic isn’t really a mystery.  Like many other aspects of marketing, there are basic fundamentals to learn, follow, and master.

Find the traffic method that you feel most comfortable using and get really good at using it.  You’ll likely fill your practice using just one or two methods when you do them well.
